In
my last blog, I discussed my recent discomfort around public speaking. But as I sat with the post, I came to realize that my fear around speaking piece was simply a mask for the underlying sense of fatigue that came over me from working too much lately. I was reminded of a quote my mother always told me growing up: "honey, you can't play nice unless you feel nice."
So true momma, so true.
So I went back to the basics this week in order to regain my selfcenteredness: I did long meditations, got to bed by 11 pm, slept in a little later then usual (7 am...whooohoooo), ate well, and most importantly, cultivated an inner-attitude of "being easy."
And you know what happened?
I settled right back into me again.
Quickly, easily, and effortlessly. My test came on Friday night when I hosted a mini-talk at the
Dharma Bums Center and felt right back at home while "on stage". No fear, no anxiety, just flow.
Phew....I'm glad that little period didn't last very long.
The moral of the story is:
if you want change, you need to create the space for it to happen. In my case, I noticed something that didn't feel right (fear), recognized that it was my problem (I was tired....and grumpy....boohoo), and made the space to allow that energy to pass. In a matter of days, I was back on my feet and ready to rock again.
Every emotion is temporary as long as we allow it to be. If you are dealing with something that doesn't work for you, take some time to clear and create space. Don't try to force yourself into something new, it will come if you let it. Remember, this too shall pass......it always does.
