It seemed like any other day but for some reason everyone
was looking at me funny. "What's the deal?" I thought to
myself.
And then it struck me.....I had ears. Big ones.
I am Mickey Mouse for Halloween. But just to clarify, I'm
not dressing up as Mickey Mouse....I am Mickey
Mouse.
The way I look at it is that Halloween is the ideal opportunity
to be something new. Most of us (if not all) spend so much
time and energy stuck in our roles. In fact, we go to great
lengths trying to maintain those identities even when the
moment is so clearly calling for something new to be born.
Living this way is tiresome and boring.
I am as guilty of this as anyone; which is why I have decided
to embody the energy of this global icon instead of simply
putting on a costume.
So this morning, I made the choice to wear my Mickey ears
all day long. The only problem was that I had a meeting with
a potential new coaching client that I had never met before.
My fears started to bubble up from within: "This is silly",
"How will she take me seriously?", "I'm not a kid anymore".
Just a few of the thoughts that flowed through my awareness.
"A commitment is a commitment" I thought to myself, so I
threw on my enormous ears and started walking to my
meeting. Somewhat expecting to see other people dressed up
for the holiday, I walked into the cafe to find that I was the
only person in costume.
Awkward.
Yet despite my own inner discomfort, everything went great
with my new client and we made the decision to work
together. Then on my walk home, a little kid looked up at me
and smiled in such a genuine way, almost as if to say "thank
you for looking funny and making me laugh". It made my
little mouse heart melt.
So when you get into costume today and your mind attempts
to convince you that you're too old to play dress up, see if
you can shift into a space of liberation. Those old thoughts
are tiresome and boring. See this holiday as your opportunity
to be free and embody a role that you've always wanted to
play. Really get into it and see what happens.
Once you try on this "new role", please share your story.
I would love to hear how it goes!!
